The paperwork side of supervision
Passing the class is the easy part. The ongoing work is documentation:
Tip: if it isn’t written down, it didn’t happen — that’s how OSHA inspectors, insurers, and lawyers all see it.
- Toolbox talks with signed attendance — weekly minimum on most sites.
- Incident reports — even near-misses, captured while memories are fresh.
- Site audits — walk the job with a checklist before the client or the inspector does.
- Crew certifications — who’s qualified on the forklift, whose card lapses next month?

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should take OSHA 30 instead of OSHA 10?
Anyone with safety responsibility for others: foremen, superintendents, project managers, competent persons, and safety committee members. Some jurisdictions — like NYC under Local Law 196 — legally require OSHA 30 for site supervisors.
How long does OSHA 30 take?
30 hours of instruction over a minimum of four days. Online self-paced versions give you up to 6 months, and most people finish in one to two weeks of evening sessions.
What is a toolbox talk?
A short (5–15 minute) safety meeting held at the jobsite, usually at shift start, covering one focused topic like ladder setup or heat stress. Many contractors require them weekly or even daily, with documented attendance.
Does OSHA 30 make me a 'competent person'?
Not by itself. A competent person is designated by the employer and must be able to identify hazards AND have authority to correct them. OSHA 30 provides the knowledge base, but the designation and authority come from your employer.
